There is something deeply special about wearing an outfit you made yourself on Hari Raya. Whether it is a baju kurung, a kebaya or a baju melayu, sewing your own Raya outfit turns the celebration into something even more personal. The single most important tip? Start early. Here is how to plan ahead.

Why plan ahead for Raya?

A handmade traditional garment takes time — to choose fabric, to fit, to sew and to finish well. The weeks before Raya are also the busiest for anyone who sews. Giving yourself a comfortable runway means a relaxed, joyful make rather than a last-minute rush. As a rule of thumb, begin a couple of months ahead.

Choose your outfit

Decide what you would like to make (and for whom):

  • Baju kurung — graceful and beginner-friendlier; a wonderful first traditional garment.
  • Baju kebaya — fitted and elegant, for a more advanced make.
  • Baju melayu — the traditional outfit for the men of the family.

Many families love to make coordinating outfits in matching fabrics — a lovely "sedondon" look for Raya photos.

Pick your fabric early

Festive fabrics sell out as Raya approaches, so choose yours in good time. Look for colours and prints you will love in years to come, and pick a fabric suited to your garment — soft and drapey for a baju kurung, finer fabrics for a kebaya. Not sure? This is something we help with directly.

Give yourself time to fit and finish

Traditional garments shine in the details — a clean collar, a neat hem, a good fit. Build in time for a fitting and unhurried finishing, which is what makes a handmade outfit look truly special.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start sewing my Raya outfit?

Ideally a couple of months ahead. Early enough to choose fabric, fit comfortably and finish without a rush.

What's the easiest Raya outfit for a beginner to sew?

A baju kurung, thanks to its looser, less fitted construction. It is the gentlest traditional garment to start with.

Can a beginner realistically make a Raya outfit?

With guidance and enough lead time, yes — especially a baju kurung. Start with the basics in a beginner class and build towards it.
