Walk into a craft shop and the wall of sewing gadgets can be overwhelming. The good news: a beginner sewing kit is short and simple. You only need a handful of essentials to start, and this checklist covers exactly what they are and what each one is for.
The beginner sewing kit checklist
Here is everything a beginner genuinely needs to get going:
- Fabric scissors — sharp shears kept just for fabric, so they stay keen.
- Paper-cutting scissors — a separate pair for patterns and paper (never cut paper with your fabric scissors).
- Tailor's chalk — to mark fabric with lines and notches that brush away.
- Measuring tape — the flexible kind, for measuring fabric and bodies.
- Seam ripper — to undo stitches neatly when you make a mistake (everyone does).
- Mini clips — to hold layers together, especially thick fabric.
- Dressmaking pins — to pin pieces before sewing.
- Thread snipper — for quick, tidy thread trimming.
- Hand sewing needle set — assorted needles for finishing by hand.
- Tracing wheel & tracing paper — to transfer pattern markings onto fabric.
- Ruler — for straight lines and accurate measuring.
- Pin cushion — to keep pins safe and within reach.
That is genuinely it to begin. Threads, zippers and pattern papers are usually project-specific, so you add those as you go (in our classes, these are provided for you).
What you don't need yet
Plenty of tempting tools can wait until you know you will use them — rotary cutters and mats, specialist feet, sergers and fancy gadgets. Start lean; add tools only when a project actually calls for one.
Skip the shopping trip
Tracking down each item separately (and guessing on quality) is a hassle. Our ready-made Sewing Kit Set gathers every essential above into one kit for RM165, so you can start on day one. Pattern papers, threads and zippers are then provided during class.
Where your kit fits in
A kit is step four in our beginner's guide to starting sewing. You will put it straight to use practising basic hand stitches and your first machine seams. If you join a class, you really only need this kit — machines are provided.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy a sewing machine too?
Not to start. In a class the machine is provided; you only bring a basic kit. When you are ready to buy your own, see our beginner machine guide.
How much should a beginner kit cost?
A sensible starter kit is inexpensive — our complete set is RM165, which saves buying (and mismatching) each piece separately.
What's the one tool beginners underestimate?
The seam ripper. Undoing stitches calmly is part of sewing, and a good ripper makes it painless.
