Learning how to start sewing can feel daunting from the outside — all those tools, stitches and machines. The truth is much gentler: sewing is a skill anyone can pick up, one small step at a time. This guide breaks the beginning down into five simple steps, so you know exactly where to start and what to learn first.

1. Start small, not with a big project

The most common beginner mistake is starting with something ambitious, like a dress, and getting discouraged. Begin with the fundamentals and a tiny first make. Confidence builds fast when you finish something — even a simple pouch — and that momentum carries you forward.

2. Learn a few hand stitches first

Before you touch a machine, it helps to get comfortable with a needle and thread. A handful of basic hand sewing stitches — the running stitch, backstitch and a hemming stitch — teach you how fabric and thread behave, and you will use them for the rest of your sewing life.

3. Get to know the sewing machine

The sewing machine looks intimidating but becomes second nature quickly. Our guide to using a sewing machine for the first time covers threading it, winding a bobbin, setting the stitch, and sewing your first straight seam. Once you can sew a neat line, a whole world of projects opens up.

4. Gather a simple beginner kit

You do not need a cupboard full of gadgets to begin. A small set of essentials — fabric scissors, pins, a measuring tape, a seam ripper and a few needles — covers almost everything early on. See our beginner sewing kit checklist for the full list, or skip the guesswork with our ready-made Sewing Kit Set (RM165).

5. Choose an easy first project

Pick something small, useful and forgiving. A drawstring pouch, a scrunchie or a simple tote bag are perfect first makes — they teach real skills without overwhelming you. We have rounded up our favourites in easy first sewing projects for beginners.

Do I need to buy a sewing machine to start?

Not straight away. Many people learn the basics before owning a machine — and when you are ready to buy, our guide to the best sewing machine for beginners explains what to look for. In fact, the easiest way to begin is to learn on a machine that is already set up for you, which is exactly what happens in a class.

The easiest way to start: take a beginner class

You can absolutely teach yourself from videos — but a few hours with a patient teacher will save you weeks of frustration. At Two Moles in Subang Jaya, our adult beginner classes start you from zero in small groups of five, with machines provided. Our Introduction class (RM195) is a gentle first taste, and you can see all options in our guide to sewing classes in Subang Jaya.

Frequently asked questions

Is sewing hard to learn?

No — it is a step-by-step skill, not a natural talent. Most beginners are surprised how quickly the basics click once someone shows them.

How long does it take to learn the basics?

You can sew a simple project in your very first session. Comfortable, confident basics usually come within a handful of sessions.

Should I learn hand sewing or machine sewing first?

A little hand sewing first helps you understand fabric and thread, but you will move to the machine quickly. Both are worth learning.

Do I need my own machine and supplies?

Not to begin. In a class, machines are provided and you only need a basic kit — which you can buy ready-made for RM165.
