The best way to learn is to make something. The right easy sewing projects for beginners teach you real, transferable skills while giving you a finished object you will actually use. Here are five first makes we love — each one a little step up from the last.
1. Drawstring pouch
The classic first project, and for good reason. A drawstring pouch teaches straight seams, turning fabric right-side out, and making a simple channel for the cord — all in one small, satisfying make. It is exactly where most of our beginners start.
2. Scrunchie
Quick, forgiving and genuinely useful. A scrunchie introduces sewing a tube, threading elastic, and closing a gap by hand. You can make one in a single sitting, which makes it a confidence-booster.
3. Tote bag
A simple tote steps you up to longer seams, boxed corners and handles, while still being very achievable. The result is sturdy, reusable and endlessly customisable with your choice of fabric.
4. Zipper pouch
Zips intimidate beginners, but a small zipper pouch is the gentlest way to conquer them. Once you can sew in a zip, a huge range of projects — pencil cases, makeup bags, cushion covers — opens up.
5. Cushion cover
A cushion cover is mostly straight lines, so it is beginner-friendly, but it teaches measuring to fit and a neat envelope or zipped opening. It is also an easy way to refresh a room with something handmade.
What these projects teach you
- Sewing straight, even seams and locking the ends.
- Turning, pressing and finishing for a tidy result.
- Working with elastic, cord and zips.
- Choosing and combining fabrics — the fun part.
These are the same skills you will carry into bigger makes like bags and, eventually, clothes.
Make them with us
Every project here features in our beginner classes. The Introduction class (RM195) starts you with a drawstring pouch, while the Get Started Sewing package (RM595) lets you choose three to four makes — pouches, scrunchies, totes, a plushie and more — across five sessions. New to all of it? Our adult beginner classes guide explains how it works.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest thing to sew first?
A drawstring pouch. It uses only straight seams and teaches the core moves in one small project.
Can I make these by hand without a machine?
Some, like a scrunchie, yes — but a machine makes them quicker and stronger. In class, a machine is provided so you can try both.
How long does a beginner project take?
Many of these can be finished within a single two-hour session, especially with guidance.
